<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Tribe. To me the word means community, loyalty, love, connection. There are four members of my tribe that live in Seattle. The parents and their two girls. I've known Dad for 26 years, Mom for 24 and the girls...their entire lives. There is nothing that I wouldn't do for them. I've felt a connection to my friends ever since I first met them. For a good period of time during college, if I wasn't over at their house at dinner time, I could count on my phone ringing...one of their voices on the other end, "Um, where are you? Dinner is almost ready..."</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNepJJ9tmH8/VFeX5EKI71I/AAAAAAAABNA/l0IWPS0PSoU/s1600/IMG_4445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNepJJ9tmH8/VFeX5EKI71I/AAAAAAAABNA/l0IWPS0PSoU/s1600/IMG_4445.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tulip Carry C Long Interchangeable Set...droooooool!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Over the years we've stayed connected and I've gotten to watch their girls grow and become amazing humans. I've even been allowed the guide the girls as I see opportunities. Never having had children of my own, it's been a joy and a privilege to be able to play some part. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I've sat and knit with the oldest daughter, chatting away like two little birds. We are so alike, which makes me realize I am admitting to being like her dad...my friend. Her younger sister follows me around asking, "are you going to knit now? I love watching you knit..." </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Now I get up to see them in Seattle every few months. This time, I heard we had an island to rip out in preparation for their new oven...Yep, nothing I wouldn't do for this family. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Connections lead to building your tribe. I'm glad they are a major part of mine and the connection felt is still so strong so many years later. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">My friends give me a little bit of trouble, my non-knitting friends that is. You see, as you've figured out by now, I'm a knitter. We (knitters) know that we generally are always packing our knitting so that when the opportunity arises, we can keep ourselves from being bored. Plus we can get the copious amount of projects we currently have on various needles, DONE. Yeah, like I'll ever truly be done with all of my UFO's at once. Ha!</span><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMq-dT-Z2L8/VEU5uvWiDSI/AAAAAAAABMY/Elv-PcyB4b4/s1600/pub%2Bknitting.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMq-dT-Z2L8/VEU5uvWiDSI/AAAAAAAABMY/Elv-PcyB4b4/s1600/pub%2Bknitting.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Liesl WILL be finished...sometime in this lifetime. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Anyway, my favorite place to knit out in public, which often makes people stop and ask me what I'm doing...is at the pub. I have had such a variety of people come up to me and start talking with me about the craft and how they thought it was "so cool" to see me knitting while sitting at the bar. I usually just smile and tell them it's a great ice breaker. I mean, it did make them walk up to me, a complete stranger, and strike up a conversation.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The most common question, besides "what are you making?" is "will you knit me a hat/scarf/socks??" It's amusing to me, annoying to other knitters from what I hear, that people will automatically think that because you knit, you surely would want to knit for them (a complete stranger). There are those who I know from the pub that I would easily knit for (have a baby hat waiting in the wings for the newest member of that family right now), but more often than not I just laugh and tell them something like "I'll get right on that...after I'm done with ______" and I fill in the blank with the list of UFO's I've got waiting for their day in the pub.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The best line I've gotten though, was from a woman who just thought it was sooooo cool that I was knitting in a pub and didn't have any hang ups about doing so. She told me she had fallen a little bit in love with me that day...</span></div>

Look around the room the next time you are among a group of your friends and think about what drew you to these people, these humans. What makes you all feel that connection? Common interest is often what may be the jump start, but then my question to you is this: why do you keep these humans in your life and why do you hold onto some of them more tightly than others? </span></span><br />
<div style="font-size: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Sitting at my desk the other day I look over and see Cathy at hers. Every now and again we will share stories. On that particular morning she asked me if I'd ever heard a podcast about Knitting Blessings...I told her I had not. She told me what it was about, which warmed my heart...but then she looked at me and said, "Do you want to hear mine?" </span></div>
<div style="font-size: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I wheeled my chair over so I could listen to her words over the sound of the office. She said it was years ago when she met a mutual friend of ours, & they'd become instant friends. That she asked her to join their new knitting group and our friend happily joined the ladies. The woman is someone I also knew, from a different part of my life -not knitting- and when she was pregnant with her first son, there was a baby shower. Cathy and I both happened to have been invited. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Cathy said, as she was telling her story, "It was at that baby shower, where I met you..." and her story was done. I was her knitting blessing? I cried. I have often felt so blessed to have had her come into my life, as well. </span><br />

The bright magentas of summer give way to the jewel tones of the cooler months.</span></div>

<div class="MsoPlainText">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I began knitting late in the game, some may say, as the
year was 2005 and I was already in my 30's. No Grandmothers or Aunts had taught
me how to knit when I was a child, rather a girlfriend whose hand knit scarf
I'd admired. Told her I'd always felt like I knew how to, but couldn't remember
"how to start"- which I would later learn is called Casting On.</span></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I ventured over to her house and it was love at first knit and again at first purl, well
maybe third purl. But none-the-less, I was addicted from the beginning. Even then, I had an idea that the
tools used really would have an effect on the item I was knitting. I started
out, like most knitters, gravitating towards straight knitting needles. It was
the image I had in my mind of what knitting was. The pointy sticks with the
colorful yarn, trailing across the knitter's lap and pooling into whatever
project was flying off her needles. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">My friend had taught all of her friends how to knit and
she was thrilled to have someone else want to learn from her. I remember her
telling me that there is no right or wrong way to knit, but that she was going
to teach me the "right way", which was continental.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She taught me how to read the ball band
and sent me out into the wild telling me to find yarn that spoke to me and lent
me needles until I decided to take the serious plunge. She spoke of these
mysterious things called Circular Needles, but I was in love with my first pair
of Straight Needles. Loved how the weight of them felt, as I knit up a scarf.
But when I moved to hats, I saw the draw to Circs that most knitters
understand.</span></div>
